ABOUT
Farzana Razzaque is an Arabic Calligrapher and Illumination Artist trained in the Ottoman tradition under renowned masters, including Haji Noor Deen and Shahrayanshah Sirajuddin. She blends classical Arabic calligraphy with intricate illumination, drawing inspiration from her Bangladeshi American heritage and reflections on societal issues. Her work seeks to bridge cultural divides, merging traditional Islamic art forms with contemporary relevance.
Inspired by the harmony of structure and creativity in Islamic art, Farzana’s practice reflects her architectural background, where she explores the interplay of geometry, biomorphic patterns, and calligraphy. Working with inks, gouache, acrylics, and shell gold, she revives centuries-old techniques through manuscript illumination and miniature painting.
Holding an Ijaza in Diwani, Naskh, Riqa, and Thuluth scripts, Farzana’s commitment to precision is evident in her work. Formerly the Program Director at Deen Arts Foundation, she is now pursuing a PhD at UT Dallas, researching the evolution of calligraphy in South Asian Qurans, integrating tradition with modern media to inspire and educate.
